Weekend Idea: Camping in Doolin and Hike the Cliffs of Moher
Adventure Idea in Ireland: Take the Friday night bus to Doolin. Next morning, hop on a shuttle to Hags Head and walk the Cliffs of Moher all the way back to your campsite. Enjoy a night out and some live music at Gus O’Connors pub and return home the following afternoon.
I love Doolin. It’s quite a touristy town during the afternoon but the crowds always disperse after lunch. As you may know, this is a very small village in Clare and also the starting point for the Cliffs of Moher.
Camping in Doolin and Where Else to Stay
You will find an excellent campsite next to Doolin Pier and this is nice spot in which I stay from time to time. It’s also very cheap and an opportunity to camp instead of sleeping in a hostel – both options have benefits.
Several hotels and B&B’s line the road into Doolin but for a cheap weekend, I highly recommend the Rainbow Hostel. It’s a very quiet spot with a nice little common room and just five minutes walk from the pub.
More importantly, the hostel is very friendly toward hikers and the perfect spot to leave whatever you don’t want to carry on the hike.
Just so you know, I have no affiliation with the hostel but this is somewhere I have stayed on many occasions. For the most part, I just sit by the fire and read my books in the evening – old age does that to you!
Hike the Cliffs of Moher to Doolin
Once you cross the bridge at Gus O’Conners pub, the road goes up for a few minutes until you will see a diversion for the trail. It’s a stunning trail but you need to be careful – especially in windy conditions.
However, it makes more sense to take a shuttle bus to the tower at Hags Head and walk back to Doolin from here. With 18km of cliff to walk, you can be sure of a decent workout but if it gets too much, you can cut this short at the visitor centre at approx 8km into the walk.
At the very least, this is a nice spot for a breather and a cup of tea.
Either way, Doolin awaits at the end of the walk and the pubs here are not just great for an evening meal but also a fun night out. It’s also a very cheap weekend away, while the bus service to/from Doolin is both frequent and reliable.
