Don’t you miss the sea?

Derek Cullen
Derek Cullen March 6, 2021 - 6:54 pm

Hi Imelda, thank you for the comment. For quite some time, I believed that I would be most happy to live by the sea. I did enjoy my time doing so but actually, my time by the sea also confirmed in some ways that I might prefer to be living somewhere a bit more sheltered and maybe “close” to the sea. So I don’t miss the sea to be honest but do think that variety is important and I will always look forward to visiting the ocean 🙂

For 25-years plus, I have dreamed of doing the same, and for a number of reasons I have not. I am too fussy, I am too scared, I am now getting to old, I am not Irish (well down my mother’s side, if that counts – not really a valid excuse), I have a physically disability, Not sure my son would thrive (maybe) – so really a number of excuses. I have followed the ventures of the Money Less Man, even went to visit him in Co. Galway, but at the time could not find him. And to be honest I do not think I could live totally off grid, although I have always liked the idea since visiting as boy the Alternative Energy Centre in Wales.

What I am pleased to see someone has the inertia to do this and in turn I wish you all the best – and look forward to hearing more.

This is one of the most thoughtful comments/views I’ve read in some time and I appreciate the well wishes, Dai. I also read The Way Home (the follow-up to “Moneyless Man”) quite recently and enjoyed the book. As for going ahead with the plans/ideas, I too have some concerns but I’m maybe blessed not to have some of the obstacles that might stand in the way for others. Either way, I’m nervously excited about forging ahead and seeing whatever may come from this move ! Thanks Dai

All the best Derek! You have a wonderful dream and it is only the beginning. Have you connected with manchan Magan ? He did the same with a plot of land. A man ahead of his time

I recently listened to Manchan on a podcast but know little (nothing) about his plot of land. Must look him up ! Thanks very much for the well wishes Leah 🙂

A lot of people have dreams and do nothing about them. Indecision, seems overwhelming etc. but I like the way you have a plan and taking steps forward. Interesting to hear after living close to the ocean, how you realized maybe being too close is too hard and like to feel more sheltered. I’ve always lived near but not right beside the ocean, and thought that would be wonderful but I can see no protection from the elements. Thanks for sharing

Derek Cullen
Derek Cullen March 11, 2021 - 1:04 pm

Cheers Aileen! Yes and there are other reasons why I’d prefer to be more sheltered such as having a better environment for growing food/crops. There’s also the fact that you cannot explore the ocean in the same way that you might explore the land around you 😉
