I will start hiking the Great Blasket Trail next weekend. Many people have asked for information on this “trail” but as already mentioned, it does not exist – I made it up.
But what should you know about it?
Hiking the Great Blasket Trail
As a rule, this long distance trail in Ireland will travel from Dublin to the Great Blasket Islands in County Kerry. Stretching for 600km, the Great Blasket Trail takes in several popular hiking paths such as the Wicklow Way and most of the trail is already established.
You see, I plan to follow a long distance path called “Coast to Coast” but then deviate from this route from time to time. Also, unlike the Coast to Coast, my own hike will end at the Great Blasket Islands as opposed to Valentina Island in County Kerry.
Trail Conditions and Logistics for the Hike
Most of the trail is on country lanes, Stoney paths and forest roads. For this reason, hiking is relatively straightforward and long distances are not very taxing. Unfortunately, quite a bit of road walking will be necessary, while getting to the local shops or facilities is often an issue.
In other words, most hikers tend to drive or hitch from the trail in order to gather supplies. For my hike on the Great Blasket Trail, I hope to plan for these sections and carry several days food at any one time. That being said, food is not cheap in Ireland and eating on the trail should help me keep some costs down.
As for accommodation, I will sleep in my tent whenever possible. Hostels are not common in the midlands and to be honest, I cannot afford the cost of hotels or bed and breakfast’s.
