As part of my ongoing reviews for outdoor gear I am using on the Pacific Crest Trail, I wanted to write a Z Lite Thermarest Review. In short, this is one of the best pieces of equipment I have purchased in recent years. On the other hand, it may not be the most comfortable or supportive Thermarest out there so if you have back issues, think carefully.
Statistics for the Z Lite Thermarest
Material – Polyethylene
Weight – 14 ounces
Length – 72 Inches
Width – 20 Inches
Thick – .75 Inches
Practicality and Comfort
As you can see, the Z Lite Thermarest is yellow on one side and silver on the other. Aside from rolling up like the old polyethylene thermarests, it folds neatly into a rectangular shape and this seems to help the Z Lite hold its shape. As mentioned, it may not be the most comfortable mattress, for blow up mattresses tend to have a better extent of cushion. However, smart design ensures that the Z Lite radiates heat back up into the body instead of allowing it to escape into the ground below.
Size and Shape
Indeed, this will seem like a much bigger alternative to most blow up mattresses but in truth, the lightweight nature of the Z Lite is very appealing. Furthemore, while this Thermarest could incur damage quite easily, it seems to hold shape in spite of excessive use and remain in much the same condition as when you purchase the mattress. On the other hand, this is unlikely to fit inside your backpack and will need to be strapped on to the exterior of your bag.
Ease of Set Up
Well, this is surely the reason you should opt for the Z Lite Thermarest for your microadventures – setup. Needless to say, once you take the Z Lite out, the Thermarest is ready to use. In other words, you do not need to inflate or deflate this Thermarest which is often the downside of most alternatives.
I won’t keep you any longer. While you may need something significantly bigger for your bad back, the Z Lite is ultralight and ultra easy to set up.In terms of value, this is also the best I have encountered and one which I will be more than happy to use even after my hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. In fact, for anyone thinking of taking on a multi day hike in Ireland, I recommend the as the ideal thermarest for hiking the Wicklow Way.
Disclosure: Please note the trust my audience has for my advice is of utmost importance to me. Hence, I will only recommend equipment I love from brands that I trust. I was not paid to review this item and I purchased this thermarest myself. I am also without obligation to leave positive reviews for the product, I just know that this tent works for me and it is likely to work for you too.
